It's a touching conclusion to the movie, allowing it to end on a happy note for all of the characters, even if it's a little bittersweet due to the nature of goodbyes. The pair share a tearful hug before he leaves and the film ends on Luca looking out at an uncertain and massive world, with a mix of trepidation and excitement. Although Alberto isn't traveling the world just yet, he feels liberated thanks to his friendship with Luca, and convinces Luca to go on without him. Instead, he'll remain in Portorosso with Massimo, who's finally given him a home after spending an uncertain amount of time alone following his father's abandonment. While Luca is ecstatic to go, Alberto also reveals that he won't be going with him. Much to his surprise, Alberto informs him that, after secretly discussing it with Luca's family, he sold the Vespa and is using the money to send Luca to school with Giulia. Luca is happy for her, but is also saddened that he can't join her. In the aftermath of the climax, the main cast ultimately realizes they have to go their separate ways, as Giulia only lives in Portorosso during the summer and spends the rest of the year away at school with her mother. The town makes peace with their secret undersea neighbors and takes a step towards greater acceptance. None of the men wish to fight the towering Massimo over it, and Ercole's "friends" finally turn against him. This earns him the respect and admiration of the village, and even allows his family to be more openly accepted as guests to the town. Upon seeing Luca and Alberto's true forms, Giulia's father, Massimo, is so moved that he admits he was wrong about his fears over the sea monsters and addresses them as the young boys he's come to know them as. He also points out that since Luca crossed the finish line before going back for Giulia, he actually won the Portorosso Cup. Luca is then forced to reveal his own sea monster status to protect Alberto from the murderous Ercole. After Giulia figures it out on her own, Luca decides to compete anyway to get the Vespa and make it up to Alberto. Despite his misgivings, Alberto tries to bring Luca an umbrella when it starts to rain during the race and ends up revealing his sea monster form again, making him a target for the villagers. This fuels tensions leading up to the Portorosso Cup, with Alberto exposing himself as a sea monster and Luca throwing him under the bus to conceal his own identity. At some point in her childhood, her parents separated, with Massimo living in Portorosso and her mother living in Genoa. As they prepare for the race, Luca develops a desire to go to school with Giulia, leading Alberto to fear that he's losing his friend. Giulia was born to Massimo Marcovaldo, a fisherman, and Maria Marcovaldo, an artist.
